Online tuition and support

I offer online support for distance tuition as well as for my local students. Here is how it can work:

  • Free online services, such as showdocument.com, allow us to share exam papers, worksheets and other files.
  • We can edit these documents while talking for free over the internet using Skype.
  • You can then save the edited files to you computer for revision.
  • We can write notes and save them using the interactive white-board provided by showdocument.com.

What are the advantages of online tutoring?

  • No traveling!
  • Flexible sessions - not limited to one hour
  • Flexible times - take advantage of moments that might otherwise be awkward
  • No need to take up space with a tutor in the house
  • Free phone calls
  • All work is saved for revision
  • Instant access to online resources including exam papers

So here are the steps:

Setting up online tutoring

  • Open a reliable email account - I recommend Googlemail as it is very fast and the features are good.
  • Install the latest version of Skype. Send me your skype name so that I can call you - mine is bobfostercoach.
  • If you don't have a microphone, buy a simple one or, preferably, buy a headset with built-in mic. Headsets are better for communicating online as there is less likely to be interference or variations in volume. I've included an Amazon link to a good one below.
  • Go to showdocument.com and register - it's free. Play around with the options just to familiarise yourself with what it can do.
  • If you want to write clearly on documents and use the white-board, a graphics table will be useful. They are not expensive, and can be used for photo-editing and other functions as well. I give a link to the one I use below.

That's it.

How does an online tutoring session work?

  • You open showdocument.
  • We make contact using skype.
  • We decide what we're going to do such as:
    • work on an exam paper,
    • answer questions from a textbook or workbook,
    • do homework,
    • revise a topic.
  • If we work on a document, such as an exam paper, we will both be able to see and edit it using showdocument. You can then save it to your computer We can go through an exam paper filling in the answers and discussing any points that you're not sure of.
  • I can also use the whiteboard to write notes and go into a topic in more detail, which you can then save to your computer.
  • If we want to refer to an online resource, such as mymaths, s-cool, youtube and sam-learning, we can do that through showdocument.

Paypal, bank transfer, or send a cheque. Decide how many sessions (hours) you want to book; there's a small discount for booking more sessions.
